Volkswagen reported a €5.8 billion group net loss for Q3 2026, its worst result in more than a decade. The deficit stems from a roughly €6.4 billion Porsche goodwill impairment and weak China demand, with one-off items totaling about €7.8–8 billion. Deliveries fell 14.3% globally to 1.89 million units; China slid 38.5% to roughly 406,000 vehicles.

### Impairment, China, and Margin Pressure

The loss concentrates on shareholders through the write-down, on workers through job cuts, and on German plant communities through closures. The Porsche impairment reflects the brand's deteriorating economics, with EV costs running roughly 20% above rivals' per company-labeled drivers. In China, VW lost its top automotive position to Asian rivals in 2024 and saw deliveries contract by nearly 40% in Q3 2026\. US tariff pressures and the EV transition compounded the picture. These drivers—falling global sales, weak China demand, tariff pressure, and EV-cost lag—converged to push one-off costs to €7.8 billion.

- Q3 operating loss: €5.9 billion (per separate account); group net loss €5.8 billion
- Porsche impairment: \~€6.4 billion; total one-off items \~€7.8–8 billion
- China deliveries Q3: \~406,000 (−38.5%); global deliveries −14.3%
- 2026 profit-margin forecast cut to ≤1%

### Who Bears the Loss and What Remains Open

The restructuring targets 50,000 job cuts by 2030, with up to 100,000 additional cuts across the group including Audi and Porsche; pay is frozen for over 660,000 staff until 2030, with IG Metall as the involved union. Four German plants face closure, with decisions expected by mid-2027\. A projected ≥10% purchasing-power loss by 2030 hangs on price inflation continuing.

The conditional test is whether China deliveries stabilize and whether the savings program offsets further EV-cost pressure. VW's 2026 revenue forecast sits at roughly €315 billion (down about 2%), while the profit-margin forecast has been cut to a maximum of 1% operating profit. A longer-term target of 8–10% operating margin by 2030 has been set. The plant-closure decisions due by mid-2027 will determine whether the restructuring stops at 50,000 cuts or extends toward the full 100,000 range.
