- Description: Tesla staged Cybercabs around Circuit of the Americas for F1 weekend, and Texas registry entries rose to 463 by Sunday. Sightings and registry counts document vehicles, not trips, and Tesla did not disclose rides completed to or from the circuit, so race-day service reliability is unmeasured.

Tesla extended its Austin Cybercab service around Circuit of the Americas (COTA) for the F1 United States Grand Prix weekend, per wheel front and eletric-vehicles.com. Cybercab Spotter logged 1,250 sightings across Austin on Saturday qualifying day, above a previous record of 1,072, per wheel front. The Texas automated vehicle registry listed 463 Cybercabs by Sunday midday, up from 300+ reported Oct 10.

The operational finding is narrower than the deployment numbers suggest. Fleet growth and registry entries are documented; trip reliability at the venue is not. Tesla did not disclose rides completed to or from the circuit, so the share of the expanded service that functioned as intended remains unknown. Sightings track vehicles, not successful journeys.

The deployment sits inside an active federal review. NHTSA opened Audit Query AQ26002 on Sept 3, 2026, with a Special Order on Sept 10 requiring 21 sworn responses, per financefeeds.com. An early-September audit covers roughly 1,000 Cybercabs, per driveteslacanada.ca. NHTSA extended the response deadline to Oct 30, 2026, approving half of Tesla's requested eight-week extension, which would have moved it to Nov 20.

### Mechanics, coverage, and the human-supervision layer

Rider David Moss reported the service boundary extended toward Elroy and FM 812, covering the COTA area, per wheel front. An app banner read "Last call is 1am · Limited to nearby dropoffs," and early searches flagged COTA Karting as "Service blocked." One rider described roughly a 20-minute walk from the rideshare drop to the front gate. These are coverage and access constraints observed on race weekend; the accounts do not establish a perception or control failure.

Per financefeeds.com and motor1.com, the Cybercab lacks a steering wheel, brake and accelerator pedals, and conventional side mirrors. The audit turns on whether FMVSS No. 135's foot-control requirement applies; Tesla self-certified compliance rather than seeking a Part 555 temporary exemption, per financefeeds.com. Whether perception, planning, and actuation are fully onboard was not disclosed in the supplied evidence, and neither was remote supervision during the COTA deployment.

Wheel front reported a driveteslacanada.ca account of an NHTSA filing describing one Cybercab incident through Sept 15, 2026: a pothole strike in an Austin parking lot in August 2026 at 5 mph (8 km/h) or below, with property damage only, no injuries, a safety monitor present, and no passengers. Whether any safety intervention occurred during race weekend was not disclosed. Independent incident data in the supplied evidence does not extend to the F1 deployment.

Tesla's Austin service runs through Uber only, per wheel front. Waymo had no presence at COTA, per wheel front. That contrast bounds comparison: Tesla operated where Waymo did not; neither system's venue performance was measured against the other.

### Expansion claims and the unresolved measurement gap

Ashok Elluswamy, identified by wheel front as Tesla's head of AI software, posted photos of stacked Cybercabs near the track, said 2 a.m. service was coming "pretty soon," and described plans for around-the-clock robotaxis before year-end, per wheel front. Those are stated intentions, not demonstrated performance. Wheel front reported Dallas as the next expansion target; a separate motor1.com report described limited customer deliveries targeted by end of 2026, with an internal unsupervised-version target of Q2 2027, while eletric-vehicles.com reported expansion to Dallas and other cities in 2027.

The event deployment shows a fleet can be staged and repositioned quickly in a constrained venue. It does not establish how the service performed under race-day demand, whether drivers were present in any vehicle, or the expansion's long-term survival. The nearest dated test is Tesla's response to NHTSA's Oct 30 deadline; race-weekend trip counts to and from the circuit remain unpublished.
