Just Eat has withdrawn AI-generated menu photography after customers saw pictures that didn't match what kitchens served. The platform apologized and paused the rollout while it reworks the tool.

### What the images got wrong

The generator turned text descriptions into dish photos, sitting between a restaurant's written menu and the image a customer sees while ordering, with no formal accuracy check before publication. The mismatches were concrete: customers on Irish takeaway menus and Belfast listings saw a battered burger rendered as a beef burger between battered buns, smoked cod labeled as a fish fillet topped with flour, a scampi item shown as sushi, and a doner kebab pictured as its flatbread ingredients. Bottled water and sauce images failed too. Belfast flagged items included cheese rolls, chips, bacon, and a cola drink, per BBC reporting.

Images carried an "AI generated" label, but the label didn't stop the wrong dish from being pictured. Just Eat said in its apology: "We're sorry for any inaccurate images... pausing rolling this out while we further develop the tool."

### Why the failures kept happening

The tool repeatedly failed accuracy testing against the items it was asked to depict, so these weren't isolated glitches in an otherwise working pipeline. Cost is one reported reason restaurants turn to AI imagery; it's cheaper than hiring photographers and styling every dish. That explains the adoption, not the errors.

Restaurants couldn't supply their own AI-generated images to the platform either, so partners whose menus carried pictures they didn't approve bore the reputational hit. The mismatches drew online ridicule and a public apology. What went unmeasured is the operational toll: no supplied figure covers how many images were generated, how many were wrong, how many customers ordered the wrong dish, or what compensation, if any, followed.

### Where it stands

Just Eat paused image generation until the technology improves and continues working with restaurants on traditional photography support. Restaurants that had inaccurate images removed are waiting on replacements, and the platform says manual checks are still required. No resumption date has been given, and it's not established which vendors beyond the flagged items were affected.

The gap sits in verification. Errors were caught by customers and reviewers, not by the system, so the correction is a withdrawal rather than a safeguard. Whether a refined tool catches mismatches before an image reaches a live menu — or Just Eat leans on real photography instead — is what will show whether the imagery returns.

What isn't in dispute is the mechanism: a generator asked to illustrate text descriptions, checked only by whoever noticed the result. The campaign is down, the menus still need pictures, and apart from the Belfast and Irish items flagged, the scope of what got through remains unknown.
